Riley Bennett

Deputy

End of Watch: December 10, 1908

On December 10, 1908, Deputy Riley Bennett was present at the Bayless and Berkelow Ranch, in the Reddington area, when a dispute broke out between members of the Mendoza family and the ranch manger. Deputy Bennett attempted to arrest two members of the Mendoza family and was met with active resistance. Ramon Mendoza Sr. stabbed Deputy Bennett while his son, Ramon Mendoza Jr., shot him three times. Sadly, Deputy Bennett died five days later and was survived by his wife and son. Ramon Mendoza Sr. was not prosecuted; however, Ramon Mendoza Jr. was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 months in prison.
