Crime Prevention
Community Resources Unit - Prevention Efforts and Citizen Awareness Program
A unique area within the Pima County Sheriff's Department is the Community Resources Unit. This fast-paced unit is pivotal in providing timely, important public safety information to the citizens and media outlets of Southern Arizona. The CR Unit also works closely with the Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers to provide state-of-the-art prevention information and oversight to hundreds of Neighborhood Watch groups in the community.
While responding to calls for service is a priority in law enforcement, prevention is also a focus of the Pima County Sheriff's Department. The deputies assigned to the Community Resources Unit are instrumental in the prevention efforts and innovations that are offered to Pima County residents through this Department. The Community Resources deputies spearheaded the Pima County Sheriff's Department's "Citizen Awareness Program." The goals of the CAP have been to search out and enact programs and presentations that keep Pima County residents informed, up-to-date, and in touch with our Department. Just this year alone, the CAP has brought the improved website, enhanced crime mapping through CrimeReports.com, and the recently launched Nixle alert messaging system to the residents of Pima County. SAVs are updating Neighborhood Watch groups and launching Crime Free Multi-Housing initiatives throughout the area as well.
In addition to the CAP efforts and technological strides, the deputies and volunteers are responsible for numerous presentations on a variety of topics that concern the public, such as reducing drug use, personal safety, home safety, bullying, law enforcement careers, and fraud and identity theft. Custom presentations are also available. Click here for a listing of presentations. The Community Resources Unit also proudly produces the numerous department publications including:
Brochures are also available on a variety of topics including Nixle, Auto Theft, Burglary, Personal Safety, ID Theft and Prescription Drug Abuse (coming soon). The Department Public Information Officer (PIO) also works out of the Community Resources Unit. The PIO is responsible for working closely with area media to ensure they have accurate and timely information about law enforcement related occurrences around Pima County. The PIO publishes Department press releases and Nixle alerts to keep the press and community connected with ongoing priority information. Additionally, the PIO partners with local neighborhood level newspapers to provide articles further connecting the community and the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
