Community Resources Unit

IMG_2121.JPGA unique area within the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is the Community Resources Unit (CR). This fast-paced unit is pivotal in providing timely, important public safety information to the citizens and media outlets of Southern Arizona. The CR Unit manages the Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteer (SAV) program that provides up to date crime prevention information as well as oversight to hundreds of Neighborhood Watch groups in unincorporated Pima County.

While responding to calls for service is a priority in law enforcement, prevention is also a focus of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The deputies assigned to the CR Unit are instrumental in the prevention efforts and innovations that are offered to Pima County residents through this Department. Our Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program is a self-defense class taught only to women. The Sheriff’s Department offers this popular class several times a year, free of charge. Keeping unused medications out of the hands of teens and out of our water supply is the main focus of the Dispose-A-Med program. The CR Unit works with local community groups to organize drop off points for citizens to safely dispose of their prescription medications. A list of event dates and locations can be viewed via the link above.  Identity theft continues to be a problem in Pima County. To help combat this crime, the Sheriff’s Department offers free, secure shredding at multiple locations throughout the county. Click here for a complete list of Shred-A-Thon dates and locations.

Deputies and volunteers are responsible for numerous presentations on a variety of topics that concern the public, such as personal safety, home security, bullying, and fraud and identity theft. SAV's at a Shred-a-thon Event

The Department Public Information Officer (PIO) also works under the Community Resources Unit. The PIO is responsible for working closely with area media to ensure they have accurate and timely information about law enforcement related occurrences around Pima County. The PIO publishes Department press releases and Twitter/Facebook alerts to keep the press and community connected with ongoing priority information. Additionally, the PIO partners with local neighborhood level newspapers to provide articles further connecting the community and the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
