The Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s Honor Guard Rifle Detail was formed in April 2005. Its ongoing mission is to publicly render the appropriate and deserving final honors, dignities, and respects to those heroes who unselfishly made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Because of the special nature of the responsibilities and commitments of the Honor Guard Rifle Detail, member selection is done exclusively by Executive Review. The final decision rests with the Administrative Services Division Commander. In short the Rifle Detail is the most elite unit within the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The Honor Guard Rifle Detail is a voluntary assignment. Members of the Detail shall be dedicated, disciplined, well-trained, humble, respectful, and professional peace officers in every aspect. They shall also serve as positive examples of performance, appearance, attitude, and work ethic.
The Detail is committed to preserving and continuing the tradition, history, and honor associated with the M-14 rifle. Each member of the detail is assigned an M-14 rifle to be used for ceremonial purposes only.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department’s Honor Guard Rifle Detail is ready to serve. The classic and most notable service provided by the Detail is the firing of three volleys, as part of the ceremony, during law enforcement funerals or memorial services.
