The Sheriff’s Department’s Fraud Unit is investigating a new type of scam. On July 23, 2008, an individual received a letter from the “Publishers Clearing House” stating that they were a second place winner of $10,000,000. A certified check for $5,565 was enclosed with the letter to cover any outstanding fees. The individual was told to contact their representative, at a listed phone number, for further information on their prize. When contacted, the representative explained that the check needed to be cashed and then given to the courier delivering the prize check.
Thankfully, this individual believed that this was a scam and contacted the Sheriff’s Department. Both the letter and the check were determined to be fakes. This scam, which has made its way across the U.S., is the thieves’ newest attempt to steal from you.
Anyone who receives a similar letter is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department and make a report. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. |
